A Splash of Sherry
What was your favorite meal as a kid?
Matt: Chicken tenders, probably.
I had a very strange childhood because I didn’t like most childhood foods — like macaroni and cheese. I just did not like mac n cheese. And my parents would be like, “What do you mean you don’t like it?” And I’d be like, “I don’t like it!” Even though I’d never tried it. And obviously it’s delicious.
I also enjoyed peanut butter sandwiches. Not peanut butter and jelly, because I didn’t like jelly. Just peanut butter. So I had a peanut butter sandwich every day for lunch as a child. Which isn’t that different from now, which is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day.
Naomi: I really liked my mom’s potato pancakes. [Like this recipe, but with regular potatoes.] She’d make them about the size of a dinner plate, and I could eat like three of them. As a 10-year-old. Maybe younger.
One year for my birthday, I had a slumber party, and I told my mom I wanted potato pancakes in the morning for breakfast. So she made potato pancakes for everyone. But then no one else liked their potato pancakes. So my mom made everyone else toast, and I ate all the potato pancakes.
Oh and sometimes she’d make potato pancakes for dinner with sauerbraten, which is disgusting, but the pancakes were good. But if we had them with syrup we didn’t get dessert because the syrup “was our dessert.” And I loved dessert. So I’d be so sad because I wanted dessert, too!
If you were going to someone’s house for a dinner party, what would you bring?
Matt: I’d bring a bottle of wine that you picked out.
Naomi: And I would’ve just picked what was on sale
I think salads are a pretty solid choice. Because they’re so basic and easy. Also appetizer stuff like pimento cheese or hummus or salsa. Who doesn’t like that stuff?
If you had a pet monkey, what would you name it?
Naomi: I think I’d name it Ross.
Matt: Not Marcel?
N: No, Ross. Because no one remembers that Ross’ monkey’s name was Marcel.
M: Except everyone.
N: Well, until you said it, I didn’t remember that Ross’ monkey’s name was Marcel. Ross just sounds like a monkey name. Marcel is a name for a shell.
M: Bernard might be a good one. Oh, actually, I’d name my monkey Claudius. Because Claudius was like the trained chimp of the Roman Empire.
Or is it an African monkey? How about Scipio Africanus?
N: We’re done with this one.
M: No, I’d do Brigadier Banana!
